Sunshine feels great; healthy skin feels even better.
Summer sunshine brings an elevated mood and plenty of vitamin D. It can also come with an increased risk of sun damage, which can lead to actinic keratosis (AK)—one of the most common precancerous skin conditions. Here are some tips to enjoy the summer sun while keeping your skin health in mind:

Pick smarter sunscreen
| • |
Look for broad-spectrum SPF 30+, because harmful ultraviolet A and B (UVA/UVB) rays don’t take vacations
| • |
Not every sunscreen works the same—mineral sunscreen acts as a physical barrier, reflecting harmful rays directly off the skin, while chemical sunscreen absorbs UV rays like a sponge, converting them into heat
| • |
Sunscreens containing hyaluronic acid can provide hydration and moisture to the skin, reducing the drying effects of sun exposure
| • |
If you’re sweating, swimming, or just human, water-resistant formulas are your friend
Apply, then reapply
| • |
Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure (not when you’re already lounging poolside)
| • |
One ounce of sunscreen is the average amount needed to cover areas exposed to sun
| • |
Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, and don’t forget your lips, ears, scalp, and hands
